About ClareMarts

Clare Marts is a farmer owned co-operative consisting of 2,500 shareholders. Clare Marts Ltd. has 4 sites with Ennis being the flagship and head office of the organisation.  The other sites are Kilrush, Scariff and Kilfenora. Sales are held weekly in Ennis.  On Tuesdays, weanlings, suckler stock, calves and sheep are on offer while on Thursdays we sell beef and store bullocks and heifers, dry cows and factory bulls, with a Friday sale in the springtime for dairy and sucker cows and some special pedigree and dispersal sales.  Sales in our other centres are seasonal and sale dates can be viewed on our sales diary.

Clare is renowned for the production of top quality weanlings and store cattle, which are produced from a well-established suckler base within the county.  These cattle are deemed very suitable for finishing at heavy carcase weights with customers from all over the country frequenting our sales particularly from the Midlands and Northern Ireland. The general base of the suckler cow herd within the county was of good type stock, however in order to further improve the quality of stock on offer The Society has, over a number of years provided several premia schemes to subsidise the purchase of top quality continental bulls.  These schemes have brought about a further improvement in the quality of stock available at our sales. Approximately 90,000 of these quality animals pass through our centres on an annual basis.

Entries for Tuesday Sales will be taken on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday (5pm) of the previous week for inclusion in the draw.

Entries for Thursday & Friday Sales will be taken on Thursday and Friday (5pm) of the previous week for inclusion in the draw.

Entries for Monday Sheep Auction taken on Friday of previous week.

The Runner Section:

Only Stock 6 MONTHS OR UNDER will be sold in the Runner Section and they will be sold after the Calf Sale.

Calves must be at least 10 days of age before they can be sold and UNDER 6 weeks of age.

***Change to draw system for Bullocks, Heifers, Cull Cows, Weanling Bulls & Weanling Heifers – From 31st January 2022 – enter your stock as usual – if the number drawn is equal to or below half the number of pens entered, we go down to pen 1 and then up.  If the number drawn is above half the number of pens entered, we go up to the last pen in the draw, then start at pen 1 and up to the number drawn.

Sheep Sellers  All sheep including lambs presented for sale must be identified with a full set of EID tags, i.e. one conventional tag in the sheep’s left ear and a corresponding electronic tag placed in the sheep’s right ear. All sheep moved to and from a livestock mart must also be accompanied by a newly issued dispatch document containing a barcoded document serial number.

Good entry of cull cows, heifers & bullocks today with just over 300 on offer. Cows dearer by about 10c/kg especially for fleshy types over 600kg. Heifers up about 5-8c/kg across all categories. Heavier bullocks a shade dearer in the over 600kg category, but stores under 600kg were no dearer on the week.

Very big sale in Kilrush with 442 on offer, which included 100 calves. Quite a few light calves available but good calves were a fine trade. AAX calves made from €5 to €160. FR calves made from €2 to €165 depending on strength. HEX calves made from €30 to €280. Again mostly dairy culls available in the cow ring & a lot of 2023 born stock on offer in the heifers and bullocks.

Ennis Mart Weanling Bulls, Weanling Heifers, Runners Calves & Suckler Stock

Big sale today with 841 on offer, which included 150 calves. Bull weanlings could only be described as an excellent trade, especially lots between 350kg and 420kg. Farmers and shippers were extremely active and this showed as prices were up 10-15 cent/kg. Heifers similar trade all round. Pairs & in-calf lots in the suckler ring made to €2,200 in both. Mostly beef type calves today, with AAX calves making from €25 to €240 and HEX calves made €15 to €275. A few good continental calves in the sale, as a CHX bull made €515 and a CHX heifer made €520.

Good size sheep sale today with just over 500 on offer.  The quality of Spring Lamb on offer today was very good and mostly over 40kgs.  Hogget’s held a very strong trade but some great sheep through them.  Very large entry of cull ewes today, the better lots of these topped €2/kg with108kgs at €228, 103kgs made €230 and 100kgs at €233. Ewes with singles made €190.
