About Us

Clare Marts is a farmer owned co-operative consisting of 2,500 shareholders. Clare Marts Ltd. has 4 centres with Ennis being the flagship and head office of the organisation.  The other centres are Kilrush, Scariff and Kilfenora. Sales are held weekly in Ennis.  On Mondays we have a sheep auction, on Tuesdays weanlings, suckler stock, calves and runners as well as breeding bulls are on offer while on Thursdays we sell heifers, dry cows and factory bulls, with bullocks on a Friday. Sales in our other centres are seasonal and sale dates can be viewed on our sales diary.

Clare is renowned for the production of top quality weanlings and store cattle, which are produced from a well-established suckler base within the county.  These cattle are deemed very suitable for finishing at heavy carcase weights with customers from all over the country frequenting our sales particularly from the Midlands and Northern Ireland. The general base of the suckler cow herd within the county was of good type stock, however in order to further improve the quality of stock on offer the Society has, over a number of years provided several premia schemes to subsidise the purchase of top quality continental bulls.  These schemes have brought about a further improvement in the quality of stock available at our sales. Approximately 90,000 of these quality animals pass through our centres on an annual basis.

Entries for Tuesday Sales will be taken on Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday (5pm) of the previous week for inclusion in the draw.

Entries for Thursday & Friday Sales will be taken on Thursday and Friday (5pm) of the previous week for inclusion in the draw.

Entries for Monday Sheep Auction taken on Friday of previous week.

The Runner Section:

Only Stock 6 MONTHS OR UNDER will be sold in the Runner Section and they will be sold after the Calf Sale.

Calves must be at least 10 days of age before they can be sold and UNDER 6 weeks of age.

***Change to draw system for Bullocks, Heifers, Cull Cows, Weanling Bulls & Weanling Heifers – From 31st January 2022 – enter your stock as usual – if the number drawn is equal to or below half the number of pens entered, we go down to pen 1 and then up.  If the number drawn is above half the number of pens entered, we go up to the last pen in the draw, then start at pen 1 and up to the number drawn.

Sheep Sellers  All sheep including lambs presented for sale must be identified with a full set of EID tags, i.e. one conventional tag in the sheep’s left ear and a corresponding electronic tag placed in the sheep’s right ear. All sheep moved to and from a livestock mart must also be accompanied by a newly issued dispatch document containing a barcoded document serial number.

Strong entry of cull cows today, as heifer numbers slipped, but there was some excellent heifers on offer. Again a fair number of dairy culls available. Heifers were a few cents per kg dearer all round, as cows were on a par with last week. A small entry of aged bulls today averaged €2.31/kg, with a top call of €2,520 for a LM bull weighing 940kgs

Kilrush General Sale including calves

Good size sale in Kilrush today with over 300 on offer. Some very good calves today and it was reflected in the prices with HEX bull calves hitting €380 and good friesians hit €175, whereas very poor friesian calves were sold as low as €5. Angus calves made from €25 to €210. It was nearly all dairy culls yet again today and these were in good order. Again, most stock in the bullock and heifer rings were 2023 born.

Good size sale again today with just shy of 800 cattle on offer. Calf numbers back today with 180 on offer. The fine day and the prospect of more good weather to come really improved the attitude of farmer buyers. Quite a few of the weanling bulls were very well done today.  A fine trade again for suckler stock as pairs made to €2,570 and in-calf lots made to €1,760. Good calves met a good trade, as HEX calves made from €15 to €375 and the few FR calves available made from €10 to €95. AAX calves made from €30 to €185 & continental calves made to €470.

Ennis Mart Mixed Bull Sale

Mixed Breed Bull Sale

We held the first of our mixed breed bull sales for 2024 today and trade was quite good overall. The Hereford bulls met good demand and made from €2,000 to €3,600. Only 1 Angus bull on offer and he made €1,850. Charolais bulls made from €2,275 to €3,625. The Limousin breed had the biggest representation today and these made from €2,375 to €4,800.

Our next bull sale will be held on Monday 13th May, with entries being taken up to Friday 3rd May.

Just over 400 cull cows & heifers today. Quite a number of dairy culls for the time of the year. The store heifer was a slightly better trade today and some very good heavy heifers available, but these were no dearer. Some super cull cows also, as these hit €3,000, and overall the cow trade held very solid. A small entry of aged bulls averaged €2.54/kg with a CH bull weighing 1,190kg making €2,940.
